A miraculous 40-point playoff comeback is almost like hitting the jackpot, so it makes sense that rumors out of Las Vegas peg Griz head coach Bobby Hauck as a leading candidate for taking over at UNLV.
The Las Vegas Sun lists the odds of Hauck getting the Sin City gig at 10-1, behind successful FBS coaches Dennis Franchione (late of Texas A&M), Robb Ackey (currently at resurgent Idaho) and Dirk Koetter (former at Arizona State, now in the NFL). And those odds are sorta official — they come courtesy of Johnny Avello, Wynn Las Vegas Race and Sports Book Director.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal quotes a source with UNLV saying specifically that Hauck has "shown interest" in the opening.
For what it's worth, Hauck was also mentioned in connection with the Runnin' Rebels when Montana native Brent Musburger gave the Griz a shout-out during Saturday night's Notre Dame-Stanford contest on ABC. Musburger mentioned the 61-48 victory, then suggested that UNLV give Hauck a ring. Not a bad endorsement from the preeminent play-by-play announcer in college football.
One major thing to keep in mind: UNLV is currently without an athletic director (the person who would normally hire a football coach), so nothing's going to happen fast.
