As part of the Indy's ongoing celebration of its 21st birthday, we've been re-printing a classic cover from the archives. This week's comes from October 3, 2002, and it features three "Pillars of the Rock Community." Due to the wonders of the interwebs and our online archive, we can share a bit of that story that specifically deals with the handsome gentleman on the right:
[Josh] Vanek began the Wäntage label in 1994 with a 12-inch vinyl compilation titled Want Comp Uno. Interestingly enough, a band on that first record, Vi Thompson Overdrive, was nearly sued by the late Missoula TV personality they named themselves after. Despite that shaky beginning, Vanek continues to enjoy working with vinyl today, although he has also branched out into CDs.
“I like the format of the seven-inch,” Vanek says. “The cost of making them has gone up, so vinyl is not the shrewdest proposition. You sort of have to be in love with it.”
The Indy is also still proudly supporting the local music scene. (Warning: convenient segue now approaching.) In fact, you may have noticed that all week we've been highlighting local bands playing our 21st birthday party tomorrow, dubbed Indy Fest. Things kick off at 2 p.m. and we hope to see you and your rock horns there.
