The Indy'sreporting on the allegations of misconduct by law enforcement officers in Lake County—and retaliation against the investigators who brought complaints against them—was informed by hundreds of documents.
Many were made available by a Montana District Court judge ruling in our favor in a lawsuit that resulted from open records requests we filed more than a year ago. Other documents were subpoenaed as part of a pending federal lawsuit filed against four officers in the Lake County Sheriff's Office. And some we obtained directly from state agencies or other sources.
In any case, in the spirit of transparency and accessibility, below you'll find several of the more important and revealing documents we obtained, some of which had not been made public until now.
