The University of Montana announced this afternoon that the new Missoula College building will be constructed on East Broadway, putting to rest longstanding questions over where the structure would be located. The announcement comes roughly two weeks after UM hosted back-to-back forums seeking public comment on two proposed sites: East Broadway and the contentious South Campus.
“I believe the East Broadway site will give us a distinctive opportunity to make a bold statement about UM and the role two-year education plays in the Missoula community and western Montana,” Engstrom said in an email release. “We will be able to implement more fully the Missoula College mission to serve the educational and work force needs of this region while placing a state-of-the-art facility in a showcase location near the entrance to Missoula and along the Clark Fork River. This places UM and Missoula College strongly in the public eye.”
Engstrom added that the South Campus site at the UM Golf Course "remains the location for future University expansion projects under the South Campus Master Plan."
The Montana Legislature this spring approved a $29 million appropriation for construction of the new Missoula College building, with the stipulation that UM match the funding with an additional $3 million. According to UM's release, Missoula College enrollment is up to 2,200 this fall.
