Lost Trail Powder Mountain

Description:

Popular with Bitterrooters and folks from Salmon, Idaho, Lost Trail Powder Mountain boasts some of the best snow to be found in the Northern Rockies, rivaling powder havens like Grand Targhee and Lookout Pass.

Straddling the continental divide from Montana into Idaho, the resort tops out at 8,200 feet, with 1,800 acres of maintained terrain and 1,800 vertical feet of gravity-activated fun. The runs are cut on a predominantly eastern aspect, stretching across a long north/south ridge that parallels U.S. Highway 93.

Two double chairs, #1 and #2, access the southern half of the resort, providing a nice mixture of groomers, bumps and tree skiing. The northern half of the area includes expert terrain along Femur Ridge, where numerous cliffs promise photogenic airs and emergency rescues. Further north, Chair #4 provides access to the steep and deep Hollywood Bowl to skiers' right, and a mixture of open terrain and small trees to skiers' left. Beware of the long, uninspiring runout to the bottom of Chair #4, as well as the very, very long lift ride back to the top. It's not where you want to be on the coldest day of the year, or if you're aiming to tally huge vert.

Excellent slackcountry options exist beyond the northern boundary, with obvious open terrain just past the ropes that lead back to Chair #4. West of the resort, descents lead into the North Fork drainage of the Salmon River.

Packed in a full day yesterday and it was soooo good. Spent a lot of time off chiar four to the farthest right of the mountain. The snow was a little firm, but completely untracked. LT got 6 inches overnight, too!
