Being a local leader in this town ain’t always easy. Ellie Hill knew that, of course, before the recent controversy over the Poverello Center’s proposed drop-in facility on the Northside. But that ongoing episode proves exactly why the Pov’s ambitious and dedicated executive director is an apt winner for this year’s award—the definition of “activist” is someone who vigorously or sometimes aggressively works to bring about social change. Hill may have moved too fast for some with her latest proposal, but as is the case throughout her tenure at the helm of our vital downtown shelter—including, most notably, how she stepped up in the wake of Forrest Clayton Salcido’s death—her intentions are noble.
