It’s been an eventful year for African-American studies professor Tobin Miller Shearer. Last fall he found himself on a conservative academic watchlist, and penned an essay about the experience that ended up being one of the Indy’s most-read articles of the year. He published his latest book on race in America in April, and he’s already busy working on another one. Despite the developments good and bad, his enthusiasm for teaching remains the same. It’s a cliche, he says, but it’s all about the students. “They’re smart, they’re passionate, they have great ideas … It’s just a delight.” That’s the sort of attitude that makes for solid teaching, and Best of Missoula winners.
