With 16 campsites on the edge of Twin Lakes, high along the Bitterroot crest, Schumaker Campground offers car campers easy access to alpine splendor. The nearby Twin Lakes trailhead leads deep into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness via Wahoo Pass or the Moose Creek drainage.
The choice campsites provide access to a nice, grassy beach, but unless you roll in early on a Tuesday morning, expect to find others frolicking there. If so, roll around the west side of the lake on the rugged spur road to find several excellent primitive sites along the lakeshore. There's no fee either way, nor potable water. Plan to filter or boil.
Renovations in 2010 spruced up the the campground up a bit, adding level tent platforms and an improved road grade navigable by ordinary passenger vehicles as of August of that year.
Note that motorized boats aren't allowed on Twin Lakes.
